Discovering the Peruvian Amazon and its diverse wildlife

10 days for a nature journey to discover the extraordinary wildlife of the Peruvian Amazon, visiting Lima, Iquitos, the Amazon Rainforest and Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.

WWF TRAVEL. This trip is part of our line of nature itineraries made in collaboration with WWF Travel. A selection of itineraries designed for those who wish to discover the world in an authentic and environmentally friendly way, with a focus on sightings of protected species. With the presence of WWF expert guides, we will have the opportunity to learn more about issues related to biodiversity and ecosystem conservation. Each trip is carefully constructed to offer high-value environmental experiences without requiring special adaptation or physical preparation.

The unusual side of Peru. Peru is a nation that never ceases to surprise: the landscapes that usually present themselves to the mind of those who think of this South American nation are those of the rugged peaks of the Andes, yet much of Peru’s territory, more than 60 percent, is covered by the Amazon Rainforest. A treasure chest of extraordinary biodiversity, a true green lung of the planet that produces much of the oxygen we breathe, to be jealously preserved and essential to discover if you are passionate about nature.

Adventure in the Amazon. Our journey will take us to discover a different side of Peru, inside the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, the nation’s second largest protected natural area, there where the great Amazon River has its source. The rivers that flow through it contribute to one of the most extraordinary ecosystems on the planet: the flooded Amazon rainforest. The natural regime of flooding and receding waters gives rise to a dynamic mosaic of channels, inlets, islands, lakes and beaches, where a large number of different species can be observed.

Forest dwellers. The reserve is home to a very high biodiversity, with more than 1,000 animal species and 965 plant species. Here we will be able to observe a large number of record-breaking primates, starting with the bald uakari, the “flag” species of the Amazon, but also squirrel monkeys, spider monkeys, tamarins, howler monkeys, capuchins and many others. We will encounter extraordinary birdlife, one above all the hoatzin, but also macaws, parrots and tanagra of paradise. And then more mammals, such as sloths and anteaters, as well as boas, anacondas, tarantulas, caimans and more.
