The northern regions of Peru boast an archaeological and historical complexity that is almost unknown to the general public, which often identifies Peru with the Inca empire whose birth dates back to the mid-13th century A.D. while the oldest pre-Inca cultures date as far back as about 3,000 B.C. It was, in fact, the northern coast of Peru, bathed by the cold Humbold Current, where the abundance of food allowed that primordial accumulation of material resources that facilitated an archaic division of labor and fostered the emergence of the first organized societies. Environmentally and scenically, the northern regions are also a real surprise with the breathtaking views of the largest concentration of high mountains existing on the planet after the Himalayas, the Cordillera Blanca, with more than 30 peaks exceeding 6,000 meters.
